Foundation Scriptures:
Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people). Ephesians 6:18 AMPC
1. Different Kinds of Prayer.
a. When it comes to prayer, there is no one-size-fits-all way to pray.
b. There are various kinds of prayers for different occasions or needs.
c. The types of prayer we find in the scriptures are the prayers of faith, commitment, consecration, supplication, worship, agreement, united prayer, prayer in the spirit, and intercessory prayer.
d. Many people pray, “if it be Thy will,” for everything, but this is not appropriate in or for every situation.
e. The only time you would pray, “if it be Thy will,” would be when you pray the prayer of consecration.
2. The Prayer of Faith.
a. Also known as the prayer of petition; the prayer to change things.
b. Matthew 21:22 NKJV –– And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.
c. Mark 11:24 NKJV –– Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
d. This prayer must be based on the will of God as revealed in His Word.
e. You can only ask God for the things He has already promised.
f. And if He promised it, it belongs to you, so you can ask for and expect it.
3. The Prayer of Commitment.
a. The prayer to cast all your cares upon the Lord.
b. 1 Peter 5:7 NKJV –– Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
4. The Prayer of Consecration.
a. The only prayer where it is acceptable to pray, “if it be Thy will.”
b. The prayer to dedicate or consecrate yourself to God’s will and plans and purposes for your life.
c. Luke 22:41b-42 NKJV –– [Jesus] knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
d. It can also be a prayer to ask for direction from the Lord.
e. James 4:13-15 NKJV –– Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”
5. The Prayer of Supplication.
a. Ephesians 6:18 NKJV –– Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.
b. The prayer of supplication is a humble, earnest entreaty or request made to the Lord, on behalf of yourself or others.
6. Intercessory Prayer.
a. An intercessor is a mediator—one who stands in the gap for another.
b. Jesus is the only mediator between God and man (1 Tim. 2:5), and He is seated at the right hand of God making intercession for us (Rom. 8:34).
c. As believers, we can come before God, in the Name of Jesus, to pray and intercede with God on behalf of those who need help and salvation.
7. The Prayer of Worship.
a. You can pray prayers of worship to God—speaking or singing.
b. Luke 24:52-53 NKJV –– And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen.
c. In Acts 13:2, they ministered to the Lord in singing, praise, and fasting, and the Holy Spirit gave them instructions concerning Paul and Barnabus.
8. The Prayer of Agreement.
a. Jesus promised that when two or more people pray the same thing in faith and agreement, He would be there in their midst, and that their prayers would be answered.
b. Matthew 18:19-20 NKJV –– Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.
9. United Prayer.
a. A company of believers, praying together in harmony and agreement.
b. Acts 4:23-31
c. Acts 4:24 NKJV –– So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord…
d. Acts 4:31 NKJV –– And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
e. There is great power released when the Body of Christ comes together to pray in faith.
10. Prayer in the Spirit.
a. Praying in tongues—your heavenly prayer language.
b. 1 Corinthians 14:14-15 NKJV –– For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.
c. When you pray in the spirit, you are praying the perfect will of God.
d. The Holy Spirit in your spirit prays through your mouth as you yield to Him.
e. Even though the natural mind does not understand it, your spirit man is built up and edified.
f. Jude 20 NKJV –– But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.
