The Absolute Attributes of God
Foundation Scriptures:
To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth. 27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God? 28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. Isaiah 40:25-28 KJV
1. Self-existence.
a. John 5:26 AMPC — For even as the Father has life in Himself and is self-existent, so He has given to the Son to have life in Himself and be self-existent.
b. God is the absolute source of all life and being.
c. Colossians 1:17 AMPC — And He Himself existed before all things, and in Him all things consist (cohere, are held together).
d. He is not dependent for being or essence upon any source outside Himself.
2. Immutability—Unchangeable.
a. Malachi 3:6a KJV — For I am the Lord, I change not…
b. James 1:17 NKJV — Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
c. Hebrews 13:8 NKJV — Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
d. He has kept every promise He has made (1 Kings 8:56).
e. Romans 8:38-39 NKJV — For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
3. He is Eternal.
a. 1 Timothy 1:17 NKJV — Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
b. Exodus 3:14 KJV — And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
c. Psalm 90:2 NKJV — Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
d. He is the Almighty: The Alpha and the Omega; the Beginning and the End; the First and the Last; Who is and Who was and Who is to come (Revelation 1:8; Revelation 22:13).
e. Eternal Life comes from God—only through Jesus—if we have Him, we have Life (1 John 5:11-12).
f. The things which are not seen—the spirit realm—are eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18).
4. Omnipresence—All-Seeing.
a. Father God fills heaven and earth; He is always near; nothing and no one can hide from Him or keep secrets from Him (Jeremiah 23:23-24).
b. Heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him (1 Kings 8:27).
c. Matthew 28:20b NKJV — And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
d. The Holy Spirit will remain with you (the believer), and in you, always (John 14:16-17).
e. John 16:8 NKJV — And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.
5. Omniscience—All-Knowing.
a. The Lord knows everything about you—everything you think, say, and do; everything you have done and everything you will do; everywhere you have been and also everywhere you will go (Psalm 139:1-4).
b. You cannot lie to the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:1-11).
c. Revelation 2:1 – Revelations 3:22
d. Deuteronomy 29:29 KJV — The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
e. He has graciously revealed to us His merciful intentions and eternal purpose—from the foundation of the earth—for us, in and through Christ, which were previously hidden and kept secret from all (Ephesians 1:7-10; Ephesians 3:8-11).
f. Romans 8:28 NKJV — And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
6. Omnipotence—All-Powerful.
a. He has unlimited power—which we see in His created works.
b. There is not anything that is too hard for Him (Jeremiah 32:17; Genesis 18:14).
c. All of creation is small and insignificant, compared to Him (Isaiah 40:15).
d. God does what He wants—no one can stop His powerful hand or question what He does (Daniel 4:35).
e. No power in heaven or earth can separate us from God or His love for us (Ephesians 1:15-23).
7. Sovereignty.
a. God is sovereign over angels, principalities and powers, demon spirits and Satan himself.
b. He rules in heaven, on earth and under the earth.
c. Before the foundation of the earth, He chose and pre-destined us to be adopted as sons (Ephesians 1:4-6).
d. He invites anyone and everyone to freely drink of the water of life (Revelation 22:17).
e. In His love, He is willingly and continually reaching out to man—but we must be willing to respond and receive (Matthew 23:37; John 5:40).
f. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever comes to His light and believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16-19).
g. The Lord always keeps His promises—but He is patiently waiting for every one of us to repent and receive His great gift of salvation (2 Peter 3:9).
8. Moral Attributes.
a. Holiness (Leviticus 11:44-45; Isaiah 6:1-5; 1 Peter 1:13-16).
b. Righteousness—Justice (Genesis 18:25; Deuteronomy 32:4; Romans 3:22b-26).
c. Love—Mercy; Goodness (1 John 4:8-11; 1 John 4:16; Deuteronomy 7:6-8).
d. Truth—His Word is true; He is the only true God; He cannot lie; He is faithful to keep all His promises (Titus 1:2; John 1:14; Romans 3:4).
e. John 14:6 NKJV — Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
